Background Magic

Boy, do I love this job. Playing with cool tools is fun work! Recently I came across Background Magic which does some pretty unique things. It creates:
Buttons and banners
Email stationery
Quality backgrounds
Left border style backgrounds

Now while it is true you can create these types of graphics witrh virtually any graphics package, I doubt you can create them as easily as you can with Background Magic! Just watch.

Step One:
Drag and drop two different graphic tiles from the catalog and they instantly combine to a create a new tile background.

Step Two:

Click the Borders button and your new tile is previewed as a left border (with a shadow if you like) on a web page.

If you don't like the way it looks, you can edit it quickly and easily. There's an eye dropper tool that allows you to grab samples of colors from the tile and drop them on the white web page to make it a complementary color. You can use the slider controls to change the width of the border and the depth of the shadow. You can also apply any of eight additional effects including emboss, erode, invert, and much more.

This type of stuff used to take hours, and you needed a variety of complex graphic tools and some decent artistic and HTML ability. With Background Magic the creation process is now in the palm of your hands.

You can also use this tool to create blank buttons and banners, email stationery, wall paper, or Explorer skins just as easily.

Tool - Undertow

Just as grunge was reaching its boiling point and radio-friendly punk-pop loomed on the horizon, Tool released Undertow, which firmly reinforced metal's prominence as a musical style — but, for once, it had something worthwhile to say. At the forefront of Tool's commercial explosion were striking, haunting visuals that complemented the album's nihilistic yet wistful mood. Drawing equal inspiration from Black Sabbath, alternative theories of science, and Eastern religions, Tool's abrasive sonic assault begins from the opening notes and continues through the final moments of the last composition, an open mockery of organized religion and its incapacity for original thought. With its technical brilliance, musical complexities, and aggressive overtones, Undertow not only paved the way for several bands to break through to the mainstream adolescent mall-rage demographic, it also proved that metal could be simultaneously intelligent, emotional, and brutal.

The James Gang - Rides Again

With their second album Rides Again, the James Gang came into their own. Under the direction of guitarist Joe Walsh, the group — now featuring bassist Dale Peters — began incorporating keyboards into their hard rock, which helped open up their musical horizons. For much of the first side of Rides Again, the group tear through a bunch of boogie numbers, most notably the heavy groove of "Funk #49." On the second side, the James Gang departs from their trademark sound, adding keyboard flourishes and elements of country-rock to their hard rock. Walsh's songwriting had improved, giving the band solid support for their stylistic experiments. What ties the two sides of the record together is the strength of the band's musicianship, which burns brightly and powerfully on the hardest rockers, as well as on the sensitive ballads.

Yes - Tales From Topographic Oceans

Either the finest record or the most overblown album in Yes' output. When it was released, critics called it one of the worst examples of progressive rock's overindulgent nature. Jon Anderson's fascination with Eastern religions never manifested itself more clearly or broadly, but one needn't understand any of that to appreciate the many sublimely beautiful moments on this album, some of the most gorgeous passages ever recorded by the band.

Kansas - The Ultimate Kansas

Epic/Legacy's double-disc set The Ultimate Kansas pretty much fulfills the promise of its title. Although it doesn't delve into the group's latter-day recordings for MCA and other labels, that's not a problem because most listeners — whether they're fairweather or dedicated fans — will want to concentrate on the group's peak in the '70s, which is precisely what this does. Over the course of 26 tracks, all the hits and album-oriented radio staples are featured, usually in their full-length album versions, plus a number of fan favorites and key album tracks that help draw a full picture of what the group did. The remastered, expanded single-disc of The Best of Kansas remains the best bet for the casual fan, since it has all the big hits on one disc, but anybody seeking to dig deeper than the hits and radio favorites — without actually hearing the original albums — should turn here, since its selection and sound is better than the three-disc box.

The Cars - Complete Greatest Hits

When the Cars released their first greatest-hits album in 1985, it was capping a golden run that culminated in 1984's Heartbeat City, their biggest hit yet. They lasted one more album, 1987's abysmal Door to Door. So, technically, there isn't that much new territory covered by Complete Greatest Hits, especially since there's only one song — the only good one, "You Are the Girl" — from Door to Door, but it's nevertheless a substantial improvement over that initial hits collection, while being easier to digest for most listeners than the exhaustive 1995 anthology Just What I Needed. Essentially, the title explains it all, since it has all of the hits, which also means many are AOR staples. This approach means that nearly all of their debut and half of Heartbeat City is on this disc, but it also means that there's essentially nothing missing (apart from perhaps "Candy-O") that casual fans would want. Also, this approach confirms that the Cars were a sexy, stylish new wave singles band on the order of Blondie — sure, they had one classic album in their canon (the debut), along with some very good follow-ups, but they made the most sense song by song on the radio, even years after their prime. To hear why, this is the disc to get.
